BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – Sunday night’s national semifinal match between Vermont Green FC and Dothan United Football Club came down to dueling penalty kicks, which finally decided the match 4-2 in favor of Vermont Green FC.
Penalty kicks came after 120-plus minutes of regulation time, including two 15 minute periods of extra time expired scoreless from the evenly matched Vermont Green FC and Dothan United Soccer Club in the USL League Two National Semifinal.
Ultimately, the PK duel extended an incredible run by Vermont Green FC, extending their season into the USL League Two National Final. The Green will host the championship match on Saturday, August 2 at 7 pm.
Coming into the evening, the match was a sold out affair at UVM’s Virtue Field. Tickets to this weekend’s games sold out in 30 seconds on Wednesday, July 23.
Vermont Green made it to the semi-final round with a come-from-behind victory on Friday night. More than 124 minutes of play included two 15-minute extra time periods, which allowed the Green to take a 1-1 tie headed into extra minutes and break it open with additional scores in each extra period, finishing off Lionsbridge FC 3-1 and securing the team’s first ever Eastern Conference Championship.
