With the D-backs officially eliminated from the playoffs on Friday, the final NL Wild Card spot will come down to two teams: the Reds and Mets.
Here’s where things stood entering Saturday night’s Reds game, which followed the Mets’ 5-0 win over the Marlins earlier in the evening. That win by the Mets (83-78) temporarily put them a half-game ahead of the Reds (82-78), who won the season series vs. New York (4-2 record) to secure a pivotal tiebreaker advantage. If the two clubs end play on Sunday with the same record, the Reds would claim the third NL Wild Card spot.
These are the different scenarios where the Reds or Mets could clinch a playoff berth.
Obviously, the Reds securing the tiebreaker advantage has made their clinch scenario much easier in the final days. In terms of matchups for the rest of the weekend, the Reds sent 2025 All-Star Andrew Abbott to the mound on Saturday against Milwaukee’s Robert Gasser. On Sunday, Brady Singer will toe the rubber for Cincinnati against Brewers ace Freddy Peralta.
For the Mets, Clay Holmes defeated the Marlins’ Eury Pérez on Saturday, while New York hasn’t announced its starter on Sunday vs. Miami’s Edward Cabrera.
