DMV warns customers of latest scam

The New York State Department of Motor Vehicles is warning residents of the latest scam circulating, where scammers are seeking to gain personal information by pretending to be the DMV.

These scammers are flooding phones with texts, urging you to act fast to avoid penalties.

“DMV will not send you texts asking for your personal information.” DMV Commissioner Mark Schroeder warned.

The State Department of Information Technology Services advises for people to be suspicious of links sent in random messages, including those who claim to be a trusted entity. Do not send your personal information via email or text. And lastly, the department says to be wary of how much you post online. The less information you post, the less data available for a cybercriminal to develop a potential scam.

Previous scam attempts have claimed that E-ZPass accounts were about to be suspended.
