Sanders, an undrafted rookie safety trying to make the Tampa Bay Buccaneers roster, was ejected for throwing a punch at Davidson on Saturday.
Sanders and Davidson got into a scuffle in the defensive backfield away from a 1-yard completion from Shane Buechele to Elijah Moore in the second quarter. Davidson initially didn’t get much of Sanders on his blocking attempt but continued shoving and lunging at Sanders, eventually grabbing Sanders on the left side of his head.
Davidson’s right arm flailed past the right side of Sanders’ head. Sanders stepped up from a crouched position and hit Davidson in the facemask. A referee behind Sanders immediately threw a penalty flag.
Davidson who was not penalized, made a “too small” gesture to Sanders after the tussle. Sanders listed at 6-feet, 196 pounds. Davidson is 6-foot-7 and 251 pounds.
Davidson, in his third season with the Bills, took over punting duties in the preseason finale with punter Brad Robbins out with an illness. Davidson was a first-team All-MIAA at punter and tight end at Division II’s Central Missouri. His first punt against the Buccaneers went 62 yards.
Sanders is the younger brother of Cleveland Browns rookie quarterback Shedeur Sanders, and the son of NFL Hall of Famer Deion Sanders. He played six years of college football, two at South Carolina before joining his father for two years apiece at Jackson State and Colorado.
