The National Weather Service in St. Louis issued a flash flood warning until 6:30 p.m. for parts of St. Louis, St. Louis County and St. Charles County in Missouri and St. Clair County and Madison County in Illinois.
The St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department said shortly before 4 p.m. that Interstate 70 eastbound was closed at Bircher and Salisbury due to the flooding.
Several roadways in St. Louis became ponds Tuesday afternoon, including the intersection of Chouteau Avenue and South Tucker Boulevard, where a vehicle became stranded in deep water. Flash flooding also impacted areas of interstates 44, 55 and 64 near downtown St. Louis, and at the Interstate 55/64 split in East St. Louis.
The St. Louis Fire Department reminded the public to never drive through standing water, adding that just 6 inches of water can stall a car, and a foot of water can sweep it away.
